Bonga Magaga

Prior to her being awarded the Gauteng Department of Health Cuba Medicine Scholarship was staying with her mother and father. She matriculated at Tsolo Secondary School in 2012, she was also awarded the Gauteng City Region Academy bursary. She then went on to study Bsc Biological Sciences as the University of the Witwatersrand in 2013 were she did her first year.

Dumisane Leqola

Prior to him being awarded the scholarship to go study medicine in Cuba was staying with her mother as well as siblings. He matriculated from Sapphire secondary School. He was also studying Bachelors of Pharmacy at the University of the Witwatersrand. He is the co-founder of the organization and previously served in the role of chairperson. He is the first recipient of the Gauteng Department of Health Cuba Medicine Scholarship from the organization.

Sifiso Gama

Prior to him leaving was staying her mother as well as two sibling. He matriculated from Bophelong Secondary School in 2011 and was awarded the Gauteng City Region Academy bursary as he was part of the three top performing learners in the school. He then went on to study Engineering at the Vaal University of Technology.

Sibongile Dinake

Sibongile prior to her being awarded the Gauteng Cuba Medicine Scholarship was staying with her mother, sister as well as two siblings, her father was absent and her mother was a single parent. She matriculated at Bophelong Secondary School in 2012l, she was also awarded the Gauteng City Region Academy bursary as she was part of the three top performing learners in the school She then went on to study at the University of Witwatersrand in 2013 where she did her first year in BSc Chemistry and chemical engineering. She was part of the second group from the Bophelong Community as well as the Bophelong Tutoring Programme to be awarded the scholarship.

LYDIA MOTSAMAI

Lydia is also currently staying with her mother and has an absent father. Prior to being awarded the scholarship by the department of health she was working at Arcelor Mittal to help her family. She matriculated from Sapphire Secondary School in 2013.

SARAH MADUNA

Sarah prior to being awarded the Cuba Scholarship was studying at the University of the Witwatersrand, doing her first year in mechanical engineering. She matriculated from Sapphire Secondary School in 2013. She stays with her mother and siblings in a shack in one of the informal settlements in bophelong known as “jokotea”.

She matriculated from Sapphire Secondary School in 2013. She stays with her mother and siblings in a shack in one of the informal settlements in bophelong known as “jokotea”.

SIBUSISO DLAMINI

Sibusiso prior to being awarded the Cuba Scholarship was studying at the Vaal University of Technology. He matriculated from Sapphire Secondary School. Sibusiso came to the Bophelong community as a toddler when her mother came here seeking a better life from Swaziland. When he was in early high school he enjoyed reading so much, that when her mother was pregnant with his younger sister he read everything he could on pregnancy. One day his mother went into labor and there was no one to help and he alone delivered his little sister. So one could say he was destined to be in the medical field.

MARIA MAMASHIYA

Maria is currently staying with her unemployed mother and her father is absent. She matriculated from Sapphire Secondary School in 2013.

THABANG MOSS

Thabang prior to being awarded the Cuba Scholarship was studying at the University of the Witwatersrand, doing his second year in Bsc. He matriculated from Bophelong Secondary School in 2012. He stays with his sister at home who is unemployed and both their parents are deceased.

Mpho Mahlase

Prior to being awarded the scholarship Mpho was staying with her mother and siblings her father has since not been present in her life. She matriculated at Three River Hoor in 2014. She is currently volunteering at the Bophelong Community Library as well as the Bophelong Tutoring Programme.

Lerato Xaba

Prior to being awarded the scholarship Lerato was staying with her sister as well as other siblings, both of his parents have both passed on and grew up as an orphan. She matriculated at Sapphire Secondary School in 2014. She is currently volunteering at the Bophelong Community Library as well as the Bophelong Tutoring Programme.

Prior to being awarded the scholarship was staying with her mother as well as siblings. He matriculated at Sapphire Secondary School in 2014. He is currently volunteering at the Bophelong Community Library as well as the Bophelong Tutoring Programme.

Modupi Lehlohonolo

Prior to being awarded the scholarship Modupi was staying with his mother and siblings, his father has been absent for most of his upbringing. He matriculated at Bophelong Secondary School in 2014 were he was awarded the Gauteng City Region Academy bursary as he was part of the three top performing. He is currently studying B.Eng. in Electronic and Electrical at the University of Johannesburg.

Siphiwe Kubheka

Prior to being awarded the scholarship Siphiwe was staying with his sister and cousins, his mother has passed on and his father has been absent. He matriculated at Sapphire Secondary School in 2014. He is currently volunteering at the Bophelong Community Library as well as the Bophelong Tutoring Programme.
